A vacuum error is the machine telling you it cannot reach or hold the deep vacuum sublimation requires. The good news: the cause is almost always one of four mechanical culprits, and they can be checked in fifteen minutes in order of likelihood — seal, valve, hose, pump.

1. Door gasket (most likely)

The chamber door seals against a large rubber gasket, and anything on it — a crumb, a smear of purée, a twist, a flat spot — leaks. Check: remove and wipe the gasket and its mating surface, look for cracks or permanent compression, reseat it evenly, and close the door with firm, even pressure. A worn gasket is a cheap, normal replacement part.

2. Drain valve left open or fouled

The drain valve must be fully closed during a run. A valve that’s a quarter-turn open, or has debris in it, will hold the machine just short of target vacuum. Check: close it firmly, and clean it if defrost water has been through it carrying residue.

3. Hose and fittings

The vacuum hose between chamber and pump loosens with vibration and moves. Check: both connections snug, no kinks, no visible cracking. If the machine or pump was recently moved or serviced, start here — an “improperly connected tube” after maintenance is a classic cause.

4. The pump itself

Oil-type pumps need clean oil at the correct level to pull spec; milky, dark, or low oil degrades vacuum performance until the pump can’t reach target. Oil-free pumps skip this failure mode but still have service intervals. Check: oil condition and level against your pump’s manual, and change it if in doubt — pump oil is the cheapest component in the whole system.

Verify the fix before trusting a food batch

Run the machine’s vacuum or functional test rather than gambling a day and a tray of food: a healthy system pulls down and holds a low pressure (community and repair guidance commonly cites staying under roughly 500 mTorr as the pass signal — check your model’s manual for its exact threshold). If the test still fails after the four checks above, contact your manufacturer’s support with the test results in hand; persistent vacuum failure after seal/valve/hose/oil checks points to a component that warranty should cover.

Prevention, in one habit

Wipe the gasket and check the drain valve at every unload. The two most common leak sources are also the two you touch every batch.
